  Beach Babe!

I really like Lyme Regis.  It has a great deal of charm but very little of the run down 'kiss me quick' of many British sea side resorts.  The beach is mostly pebble, but there is a small section of sand, which is extremely popular - especially on a hot, sunny day as you can see in the image above.

the second picture is a little more enigmatic.  A hat with a stone in it, and some towels.  I'd love to know the full story here - or maybe I wouldn't.

  Spring

I love spring.  This year we are enjoying some really good spring weather, with bright, sunny days.  The trees are greening up and the world is turning green once more.  There are lots of familiar flower in gardens, such as daffodils and crocuses, but the flower that always makes me smile is the snake's head fritillary.  No other flower as the same kind of checker board markings found on this one - and it means that spring is here again.

  Storm Damage

Compared with many people in the South West, we got of quite lightly with the recent winter storms.  However, we did not get off Scott free.  As you can see the gales blew over sheds at the allotments and some of the plots are waterlogged.  One allotment holder has even dug some drainage ditches.

Roll on spring...

  Monochrome - In Colour!
Knot

Both of the photos in this post are effectively monochromatic even though they are colour images; one consists of shades of brown and the other, shades of green. They rely for their success on the patterns and textures of the subject and especially on the lighting.  In the image above the light comes form the side and in the image below the subject is lit from behind.  The images rely on play of light on the texture of the subject which creates the contrast between different shades of their main colour.

Light and shade - that is the essence of photography.  The subject is purely secondary.  If the lighting is right then any subject can make a good photograph.  Perhaps I am stretching things a little here, but not much - honestly!

  Then and Now
HMS Victory

I was in Portsmouth the other day and I was struck by the contrast between the modern and the ancient.  On one hand I saw some state of the art, twenty first century stealth warships, and on the other there is the iconic eighteenth century HMS Victory.  Both are magnificent and need to be looked at on their own terms.

  Digital Abstract

Robert Capa said, "If your pictures aren't good enough, you aren't close enough."

I certainly enjoy getting in close to a subject with a macro lens and showing small details, in this case details of a red cabbage.  I liked the way that the leaves curve around each other creating swirls.  Turning a simple close up into an abstract by using digital processing, or more accurately, abusing digital processing can sometimes be worth a try.  The false colours remove any relation to the original subject and force the viewer to look at the shapes and colours for their own sake. I've included the original image of the cabbage below as a contrast.

  Light!

I was walking Bruton this morning when I looked down an alley and saw the morning light hitting the side wall.  This scene would have been nothing without that morning light.  In fact, a good photograph often does not depend upon the subject, what really matters is the light.  If the light is right even a very ordinary subject can look stunning.
